Saenchai Marks Return to the Ring with Dominating Win
After an 8-month absence from the ring since his last fight in January this year, Saenchai made a highly-anticipated return to the ring on 19 September. Saenchai headlined the aptly-named Thai Fight: New Normal by taking on Brazilian challenger, Rodrigo Freitas.
In April this year, Thailand implemented nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Muay Thai camps and fighters were affected as gyms were ordered to close and events were all suspended.
The lockdown was eased in July and Muay Thai camps were allowed to reopen for training. Events also resumed albeit without a live audience. The restrictions were then further eased in August where a limited number of audience was allowed with social distancing observed.
Popular Muay Thai series, Thai Fight returned with a stacked card featuring top stars as well as the promotion’s inaugural female bout.
In the main event, Saenchai put up a royal performance to thrill fans in attendance as well as fans from around the world who caught the livestream. Freitas came on strong from the get-go with a series of strong attacks. Saenchai returned the favor, coming back with an unrelenting offensive and caught Freitas with a head kick in round one that sent him down onto the canvas. The Brazilian was able to recover to survive the round.
The remaining two rounds played out the same as the living legend continued to dominate. Despite the overwhelming offense from Saenchai who looked for the finish, Freitas survived a number of close-calls and was able to go the distance in the three-round bout. It was no surprise when Saenchai was awarded the win from the judges’ scorecards.
A dominating victory to mark the legend’s return to the ring.
